What is CRO? (Conversion Rate Optimization)

We all know that marketing is a tough game. You have to do a lot of things to drive traffic and generate sales. There also are a lot of details that are a part of a successful marketing for your website. That includes CRO. CRO is one of those things you shouldn't ignore because it's one of the most important parts of your marketing and your business in general.

What is CRO?

CRO stands for Conversion Rate Optimization and it basically means that when someone visits, for example, your store, they are more likely to make a purchase or do what you want them to do.
A problem that a lot of people have with ecommerce CRO is that they might be getting traffic and clicks on their website, but they are not able to generate sales. Even if you have all the clicks in the world, but can't make a sale, you are doing something wrong.

Are CRO and SEO related?

CRO and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) both optimize the used words on your website for better results, but they focus on two different aspects of marketing. CRO persuades your clients to make a purchase and SEO helps your clients find you. Both are very important, but they shouldn't be confused with one another.

How to boost your CRO?

Before you learn about how to boost your CRO, you need to learn the key principles of CRO which are:
  1. Having a clear statement
  2. Encouraging your customers to act
  3. Avoiding lower barriers to conversion
Some of these could be:
  • Having high prices
  • Having slow loading pages
  • Forcing registration
  • “Buy now„ button that's hard to find
  • Confusing and hard to read product descriptions
  • No product images
  • Off-site checkout
These are just some of the barriers that prevent you and your customer to complete the transaction. These things just make the whole process harder and they don't make a good impression. Once removed, you'll have a much easier time selling your products or services to your customers.

Making your customers feel safe

If you want to boost your conversion rate you can do a few things. One of these things is to hire a copywriter. A copywriter will write and remodel the things on your website in a way to persuade
potential clients to buy. Another way to boost your CRO is to do these things yourself. Educate
yourself on how to write a copy and adjust accordingly.
Basically treating your customers as real human beings will be the best thing to do. Don't treat your customers like a number you see on your analytics, because that's what most people do and that's why they don't make sales. There is a person on the other side of the screen who has problems and who has feelings. Once you realise that the whole game of business and marketing will become simpler.

Conclusion

Understanding your customers is probably the most important thing when it comes to marketing not just in CRO and SEO. Being clear on who your ideal customers are will allow you to create more value for them and ultimately transform them into your long-term customers.

DistilBio Terms App now available in Elsevier’s ScienceDirect

The DistilBio Terms application detects  biomedical concepts such as genes, proteins, drugs, compounds and pathway mentioned in the article. Once the user has installed the app, it is visible when viewing ScienceDirect articles and detects the terms using relevant life-science ontologies and synonyms.

Clicking on the terms takes the user to the DistilBio site that displays all the connections available for the term. The results are derived from many publicly available data sources such as Uniprot, Drugbank, PharmGKB, OMIM, CTD, Chembl, Chemspider, IntAct, MINT and Gene Ontology and presented as a set of connections.

Let us look at a paper and see how this app works. On opening the full text of a paper, the DistilBio terms is displayed  list of the terms detected in the paper and categorized into pathway, genes, proteins, drugs, diseases, compounds and organisms. The terms are also highlighted as clickable links in the text of the article.

Clicking on any of the terms displays the connections available for the particular term. Clicking on Breast Cancer in the above example displays the results as below.

Clicking on the name (as shown in red) takes the user to the DistilBio site where the user can explore further.

To install the app, follow the instructions below:

  1. To get started you will need to have an account on Elsevier’s Science Direct.  If you already do, please login at ScienceDirect and move on to the next step. If you don’t have an account you can create an account for free at ScienceDirect (click on Register on the top right of the page).
  2. Now open the “DistilBio Terms” app page and click on “Add Application”.
  3. Open any article on Science Direct and you will see a widget titled “DistilBio Terms” appear on the right column of the page.
  4. After the widget has loaded, click on any terms on the widget to view all connections for that specific term in DistilBio.

This app is best viewed in Firefox 3.4+ or Chrome 10.1+.

Metaome releases the “DistilBio Terms Bookmarklet”

Metaome has released the DistilBio Terms  bookmarklet which detects and lists biomedical concepts such as genes, proteins, drugs, compounds and pathway mentioned in a webpage. This is similar to the app released by Metaome for Elsevier’s ScienceDirect. Now the app can be used on any webpage. The user has to install the bookmarklet in their browser’s bookmark bar once and has to only push the button to highlight all recognized terms in a page.

The DistilBio bookmarklet detects the terms using relevant life-science ontologies and synonyms. Clicking on the terms takes the user to the DistilBio site that displays all the connections available for the term. The results are derived from many publicly available data sources such as Uniprot, Drugbank, PharmGKB, OMIM, CTD, Chembl, Chemspider, IntAct, MINT and Gene Ontology and presented as a set of connections.

To see how the bookmarklet works, let us look at an article related to biology on the net. I found a paper in plosone.org and clicked on the DistilBio Terms button. This displays a panel on the right of the page with a list of  detected in the paper and categorized into pathway, genes, proteins, drugs, diseases, compounds and organisms. Clicking on any of the terms takes the user to the DistilBio site and displays all the connections available for the term.

Try it on your data too

This app can also be used by users to find terms in their data which are not webpages. All the user has to do is go to http://terms.distilbio.com/tools and click on the “Try it” button. The user can now copy & paste their data in the box and hit submit. All biomedical concepts are detected and displayed as clickable links to the DisitlBio data.

Installing the bookmarklet is very simple.

  1. Go to http://terms.distilbio.com/tools.
  2. Display your Bookmarks bar by hitting Shift+Ctrl+B
  3. Drag the “DistilBio Terms” button (displayed in the site) to your Bookmarks bar.
  4. When you are browsing the web, push the “DistilBio terms” button to highlight all recognized terms in the page.
